Laskar Pelangi : The Audacity of Hope
This is a movie adapted from a best-selling Indonesian novel. It took 40 days of filming on Belitong island, Bangka-Belitung province. Involving 12 local actors, it reportedly cost Rp. 8 billion. With all the efforts of transforming Laskar Pelangi ( rainbowwarrior ) into a moving picture, will it satisfy readers’ imaginations?
Laskar Pelangi, the novel, was written by Andrea Hirata in 2005, based on his own experiences. It is about an inspiring teacher and her 10 students in the poverty-stricken Kampong Gantong in Balitong. The poor condition of their school building does not dampen their high spirits and hopes for a better future.
To years later, the novel became a phenomenon in Indonesian literature. With its humanistic touch, Laskar Pelangi has sold more than 500,000 copies and has on the position of Must-Read novel in every counter of the nation’s bookshop and media revie pages. It has finally overcome the domination of teen lit, chick – lit and even the religious novels, the popular theme of today.
Andrea entrusted the filming of the story to the respected figures in the film industry, Mira Lesmana and Riza, as producer and film director. In July 2007, Mira and Riri started the pre-production, hich took a year to finsih. Together with the scripwriter Salman Aristo they decided to create a different scenario for the film.

Yogyakarta is the royal capital of DIY. It is a center of fine and traditional Indonesian culture. The puppets made from leather are available in the souvenir shops. It is also for silversmithing and batik industry.
Solo and Pekalongan are also famous for “kain batik”. Most kain is decorated with beautiful colored designs, which are drawn of hand stamped on the cloths as part of the batik dying process. The batik designs are one of Indonesia’s most famous handicrafts and have often been limited by western textile designer. The batik designs of Solo are different from those of Pekalongan, and the “kain batik” of Pekalongan is very colorful.
Bamboo and rattan are used to make wicker chairs and other furniture. Cirebon is famous for its industry. Bamboo and “mendong” are also used to make baskets, fans, mats, etc. Tasikmalaya its famous for this kind of industry.
Bandung, one of the most modern Indonesian cities, is a popular resort town. Some people in Cibaduyut, in the Southern Bandung, make shoes for domestic markets and for export. Making shoes is a home industry. Puppets made of wood and cloth are also available in the souvenir shops.
In fact there are still many other local handicrafts found in other parts of Indonesia.

A car is still an expensive vehicle for most Indonesians. But the government’s program of cheap cars certainly will  worsen the traffic congestion in the capital city of Jakarta.
On the other hand, it can help the Indonesian people who want to have a new car with a cheap price. This policy is also to increase the growth in economy and people’s welfare.
On the other hand, this policy is in contrary to the local government’s program, to reduce traffic regulation. The public complaint is certainly expressed by the governor of DKI Jakarta, Joko Widodo and NBSP.
 Jokowi also plans to restrict the used private vehicles. He ensures this plan will not be successful when the cheap cars are roaming on the streets of the capital.
Board members of the Indonesia Consumers Foundation (YLKJ), Tulus Abadi, also protested the policies of cheap cars that are listed in G.R 41/2013 of Regulatory Budget Environment Friendly Cars (LOGC)
