TEN WAYS TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ READING SKILL

Reading is an activity which is productive to do, since reading is so important to human life. Advantages can be delivered from reading. However, we need to grow our interest in reading and writing.

Various efforts we do to get more knowledge from reading. It is hoped that learners have insight. Things need to be done by the school, the students and the teachers to improve students’ reading interest, are :

1.                  The students assigned to make report or summary to the books they have read. The school can make a program like ‘fun reading’, people reading books’, ‘reading and gathering’, etc.

2.                  Reading books which have pictures or images in it. They are able to give easy understanding. Librarian can provide the library with those books.

3.                  Reading by using e-book. The use of e-book is so effective, since internet needed by many level people and to avoid the use of internet just for the game. School can provide with free internet and it can spread in all part of the school.

4.                  School can held slogans of reading and writing. They are put on the strategic places to be seen, like ‘reading opens the world window, while writing is filling the world behind the window’, ‘reading is a source of knowledge’, reading is listening to what the world said’, etc.

5.                  Strategic and nice places for students to read books, besides library can be provided by school, like on the school garden, on the hall, on the porch, on the school veranda, on the sitting points (joglo), etc.

6.                  To put reading as the beginning or the ending of the lesson hour. School can provide thirty minutes before or after the class for students to read books. In the end of a month, representative teacher will give mark for them by speaking or telling stories.

7.                  Teachers can also persuade to the student’s parents for always giving presents to their children by giving books than toys or dolls. Meanwhile, school can also participate by doing the same. The winner of a game held by school will be given reading books.

8.                  School adds ‘literature’ as an extracurricular. In that activity students will be learnt to make books. Reading will support them to finish the book.

9.                  To create small bookshelf in every class. It can be put on the back-corner of the class. Students can donate the books they have read there.

10.               Teachers in every subject can give homework to read some papers in the book. Then the next day they ask them to tell orally or in written. They can tell about the pattern, the example, the story, the events, etc.

When reading has growth in self learners and become a habit, it means that we have strived to change the attitude. Learners will become love of reading. They can’t live without reading. All books will be finished in a minute. We should try right now. (kd)
